NASA World Wind 1.4

If you haven't heard of NASA World Wind 1.4, watch the video below. It is more than just a 3D animation of the Earth, although the elevation data and manipulation capabilities in themselves are worth the download. World Wind also presents data from other worlds, here on Earth and in our solar system.

Data from the GSFC Scientific Visualization Studio is integrated into its dynamic capabilities. And the "Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS produces a set of time relevant data that's updated every day. MODIS catalogs fires, floods, dust, smoke, storms and even volcanic activity." With an Internet connection, downloads and views of data can be customized to fit interests.

World Wind is also capable of downloading and displaying current data from Globe, place names and borders, latitude and longitude graphics and data, topographic information and landmarks.

Then you can travel the solar system. Visit Mars, the Moon, Io and other places in the solar system, and view these Worlds using actual data and images from NASA missions.

If that's not enough, download World Wind SDK for Java and incorporate the technology into your own applications. (see Google Earth)
